HOW TO STOP WORKPLACE BULLIES

Most people think of bullies as kids, bullying doesn’t end with high school. Unfortunately, childhood bullies often grow up to become office bullies. Workplace bullies have one thing in common; intimidating their victims, in addition to that they may spread false information about a colleague to damage the person’s reputation, they may also make fun of whatever it is that particular employee does or tell inappropriate jokes at the person’s expense.

Bullying is something to be taken very seriously in the office as it not only affects the victims but the office environment in general because it can lead to lack of productivity, creativity and low morale or eventually the victim is forced to quit his/her job.

But experts in office bullying say there’s hope. Below are steps you can take to stop office bullies:

  1. DOCUMENT

Always keep detailed accounts of what happened, what was said; who heard and saw what took place. Doing this helps to regain certain control of the situation.

      1. DON’T BE QUICK TO REACT

Most bullies are often looking for reactions so never show you are upset as this motivates them to continue the act. Always try to remain calm and never show your emotions on your face.

      1. DON’T TRY TO BE TOO NICE

If you give the impression that you’re trying to be in the bully’s good books by agreeing to whatever he says and do or doing him favors, then you are giving him an opportunity to dig his claws even more into you.

      1. GET SUPPORT FROM LOVED ONES

Seeking help from family members or a professional like a Doctor goes a long was as bullying can lead to feelings of isolation, emptiness and depression. Get a support system that makes you feel better and express yourself.

  1. REPORT TO THE APPROPRIATE DEPARTMENT

If your organization has a formal HR department that deals with employees complaints, then it’s best you waste no time in reporting such harassment but if your company has no such arrangements then find a Supervisor or Manager you can explain the situation to so that proper action can be taken.
