Workplace burnout involves more than just been tired or the usual day-to-day stress. Burnout is characterized by chronic exhaustion and strong feelings of frustration and powerlessness. People suffering from burnout tend to withdraw emotionally from their work, disengaged and lose motivation. There are various reasons why this may be experienced, some of these reasons are:

  • Excessive workload.
  • Lack of recognition for what you do.
  • Unclear job goals.
  • Feelings of being treated unfairly.
  • Doing monotonous work.

It is very vital to note how to avoid or prevent these because not only will it affect your creativity greatly, your career will also be affected. Below are steps to combat it:

  1. WORK WITH PURPOSE

It’s not enough to go to work every day and look forward to month’s end to earn your salary. You need to set goals, what you want to get done by the end of each day. Look for things that motivate you that are work-related and work at achieving these things every day, so this means putting down in your diary or workbook or wherever you note down things, your daily activities that must be completed.

  1. LEARN TO DELEGATE UNNECESSARY WORK

If you have so many things to be done why not delegate the less important ones to your subordinates to avoid weighing yourself down. You need to stop believing you’re the only one who can get the job done. According to James Cash Penney, founder of the J.C. Penney retail chain, the surest way for an executive to kill himself is to refuse to learn how, and when, and to whom to delegate work.

  1. HELP OTHERS

Helping others no matter how small gives meaning to your life, it energizes and motivates you. Taking time out to develop people helps you become less preoccupied with yourself and that balances the effects of stress and burnout.

  1. RENEW YOURSELF

You need to make time for regular exercise and sufficient rest. Exercise has been known to be a great stress reliever, it produces endorphins—a chemical in the brain that act as natural painkillers—and also improve the ability to sleep, which in turn reduces stress.

Apply all of these and you can be sure of never experiencing burnout.
